Shannan (Lhoka) is located in the southern part of the Gangdise Mountains and the northern part of the Nyenqingtangula Mountains, in the middle and lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo River. It covers an area of over 80,000 square kilometers and has a population of over 300,000, with the Tibetan population accounting for 98%. Its unique natural conditions have made Shannan the cradle of the Tibetan people's livelihood and prosperity. The beautiful myth of the divine monkey and the Rakshasa woman giving birth to the highland human race originated on Gongbo Ri Mountain in Zedang. As a result, Gongbo Ri Mountain has become a sacred place for the Tibetan people to trace their roots. The long-standing cultural tradition has given Shannan a prominent place in the political and historical history of Tibet. The first slave-state regime in Tibet, the Tubo Dynasty, was established in Shannan and later used it as a base to unify all of Tibet.
