Huang Binhong (1865–1955), styled Zhi, known as Puchun, also used the name Yu Xiang, was from She County, Anhui Province. He taught at Xinhua Art College, Changming Art College, and Shanghai Art College, and served as a mentor at the Chinese Painting Research Society of Jinan University. In June 1937, he was invited to serve as a professor and appraiser of calligraphy and painting at Beijing Art College and the Beijing Ancient Objects Exhibition Hall. In 1948, he taught at Hangzhou National Art College. Later, he became the director of the National School of Chinese Painting Research (later renamed the National School of Ethnic Art Research) at the Central Academy of Fine Arts.
Huang Binhong's landscape paintings are characterized by "dark, dense, thick, heavy, and innovative" features, and he proposed the theory of "Five Brushes and Seven Inks." He authored works such as Honglu Talks on Painting, The Subtle Charm of Ancient Paintings, Essays on Painting, and Huang Binhong's Paintings and Sayings.
