In my youth

Author: Liu Qingbang

Publish Date: 2002-06-01
Features: Liu Qingbang's writing career began with writing love letters to his girlfriend. Unexpectedly, after a few dates, he became a writer instead. His letters were filled with bourgeois sentiment and tender affection, which later inspired famous works such as Shoes, Wind Chimes, Mei Niu Letting Sheep, and The Xiang Family. Stylistically, he inherited influences from Stefan Zweig, Yasunari Kawabata, Shen Congwen, and Wang Zengqi. His transcendence over himself and his predecessors is reflected in his "harsh novels," such as Walking Through the Cave, Sacred Wood, In the Livestock House, and Snowstorm on Flat Ground, which reveal the darkness and cruelty of life at the bottom and constitute genuine folk life. Liu Qingbang's short stories are not only numerous but also of high quality, winning national awards multiple times. In recent years, he has even dominated almost all national short story awards, earning him the title of "King of Chinese Short Stories."
