Zhu De, styled Yu Jie, was a native of Yilong County, Sichuan Province. In 1909, he enrolled in the Yunnan Military Academy and joined the Chinese the same year. He participated in the Xinhai Revolution. From 1913 onwards, he served in the Yunnan Army as a company commander, deputy regiment commander, regiment commander, and division commander. He took part in the National Protection War and the Legal Protection War. In 1922, he went to Germany for studies and joined the Communist Party of China the same year. In 1925, he studied military science in the Soviet Union and returned the following year. In 1927, he founded the Officer Training Corps of the Third National Revolutionary Army in Nanchang and participated in the leadership of the August 1st Nanchang Uprising, serving as the deputy commander of the Ninth Army of the uprising force. In 1928, he participated in the leadership of the Xiangnan Uprising. During the War of Liberation, he served as the commander of the Fourth Army of the Workers' and Peasants' Revolutionary Army, the commander-in-chief of the Corps of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army, the commander-in-chief of the Red Army of the Central Revolutionary Base Area, the commander-in-chief of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army, and the chairman of the Central Revolutionary Military Commission, concurrently serving as the commander-in-chief of the Red Army of the Central Revolutionary Base Area. He took part in the Long March. During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, he served as the vice chairman of the Central Military Commission and the commander-in-chief of the Eighth Route Army (later renamed the 18th Group Army, serving as the commander-in-chief). During the War of Liberation, he served as the vice chairman of the Central Military Commission and the commander-in-chief of the People's Liberation Army. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he served as the vice chairman of the Central People's Government, the vice chairman of the People's Revolutionary Military Commission, the commander-in-chief of the People's Liberation Army, and the vice chairman of the People's Republic of China. In 1955, he was awarded the rank of Marshal. He was the vice chairman of the Defense Commission, the chairman of the Standing Committee of the Second, Third, and Fourth National People's Congresses, a member of the Sixth Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, a member of the Seventh Central Committee and the Secretary of the Central Secretariat, the vice chairman of the Eighth Central Committee, a member of the Central Committee of the Ninth Central Committee, and a standing committee member of the Central Committee of the Tenth Central Committee.
