Features: The fifth edition of "Introduction to Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine" was developed under the leadership and organization of the Ministry of Health's Teaching Materials Office and the National Higher Medical Education Textbook Construction Research Association. It aligns with the training objectives of pharmacy programs, highlights the disciplinary characteristics of pharmacy, and follows the guiding principles of "Three Basics," "Five Qualities," and "Three Specifics" in textbook development. Building on the fourth edition of "Basic Principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine," this collective research and revision were conducted by experts and scholars from eight institutions—China Pharmaceutical University, Capital Medical University, Jinan University, Fourth Military Medical University, Chongqing Medical University, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, Qinghai Medical University, and Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is designed for pharmacy programs and related disciplines in higher medical education institutions nationwide to meet the needs of pharmacy talent cultivation in the new century.
The fourth edition of "Basic Principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine" consists of three main parts: fundamental theories of traditional Chinese medicine, basic knowledge of Chinese materia medica, and basic knowledge of formulae. To meet the needs of the program, reflect the actual content of the textbook, and avoid confusion with the "Basic Principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine" used in traditional Chinese medicine colleges (which focuses on fundamental theories and diagnostics), the fifth edition was renamed "Introduction to Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine" after extensive discussions at the fifth round of planning textbook editors' meetings for pharmacy programs in national medical colleges in Wuhan in March 2002. The textbook review committee for pharmacy programs approved this change.
Based on the framework of the fourth edition, this edition has been adjusted and expanded according to the current development of the discipline and the requirements of the teaching syllabus. Key additions include fundamental concepts in traditional Chinese medicine theory, standardized names for syndromes, and the removal of toxic herbs like Aristolochia contorta and Stephania tetrandra. New additions include clinically common herbs such as Cassia obtusifolia, Houttuynia cordata, and Bambusoideae. The textbook introduces 180 commonly used Chinese herbs and 98 commonly used formulae. Additionally, it provides a comprehensive introduction to modern research on fundamental theories of traditional Chinese medicine, pharmacology of Chinese herbs, and formulae.
The writing of this textbook strives to reflect advanced, systematic, scientific, and applicable principles to better help students learn and master the subject, inspire their interest in further study, and cultivate new talents for the 21st century.
