Features: To enhance the cultural literacy of contemporary college students and strengthen the teaching of core language and literature courses, the National Advisory Committee on Chinese Language Teaching in Higher Education, under the Ministry of Education, formulated and approved the "Professional Reading List for Undergraduate Students of Chinese Language and Literature in Higher Education" after extensive deliberation and careful discussion in 2000. The list comprises 100 books, and it explicitly states that universities should include students' reading progress as one of the assessment criteria for core courses. In February 2001, the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Education notified all universities nationwide to begin using the list. The majority of the books in this designated list were published by our press. Therefore, we compiled and published this series of "Essential Readings for College Students." The selected books are representative literary works from ancient and modern China and abroad, possessing strong classicism and academic rigor. At the same time, as the series reflects the academic trends and achievements of different eras, its historical significance in academia is equally undeniable. The selected books are not only indispensable for students of language and literature to engage in professional learning and academic research but also serve as important reading materials for students of other disciplines to strengthen their humanities, enrich their cultural foundation, and promote their professional studies.
