Features: The novel passionately praises the primordial creator of life—the greatness, simplicity, and selflessness of the mother. It also highlights the unparalleled significance of life's continuation (represented in the novel as the reproduction and propagation of "seed"). Amidst this flow of life, the smoke of history and war lingers, presenting a truthful and unbiased portrayal of a period in history. Through the mother, the novel depicts her toil and hardship in nurturing one child after another, and she regards Shangguan Jintong as equally important to her life. This is intended to convey that humans are always the most precious in the universe, and life holds undeniable meaning and is the foundation. The propagation and continuation of "seed" (i.e., Shangguan Jintong's importance and favor) naturally holds unparalleled significance. The inheritance and continuation of life are the source of humanity's eternal existence. Everything in the universe derives its value and meaning because of the presence of life. In this sense, the novel reveals that humans are not only the subject of history but also the subject of beauty. The continuation and inheritance of life are something to be celebrated. A universe or world devoid of life, whether beautiful or ugly, pure or dirty, base or noble, loses all meaning. Thus, we come to understand the true meaning of the I Chuan's "The great virtue of heaven and earth is life." The depth of the novel or the author's profound insight lies in embedding this seemingly simple yet universally profound truth within the relentless struggle for survival and the preservation of lineage led by the mother and her children. Therefore, the creator of life—the mother—undoubtedly deserves respect and praise. The mother is selflessness, love, devotion, and the vessel of life. Genuine respect and gratitude for the mother also reflect humanity's ultimate reverence and love for life. From this, we can perhaps see that the author's maternal consciousness, or perhaps female consciousness, plays a dominant role in the novel. While men may create social history, it is the mother, in her primordial female form, who creates the history of life—or, more broadly, human history. This seems to reflect the author's deep-seated Oedipal complex for the mother. Shangguan Jintong, as an embodiment of the author's consciousness, finds emotional resonance in his attachment to breast milk—the "proof of lactation"—as it stems from a personal complex of the author's own. The main focus of the novel remains the depiction of life's process, celebrating the essence of life and the greatness of the mother. The portrayal of history and urban life serves to reveal the twists of human nature and raise questions, but they are not the novel's central theme. The author's focus remains on portraying and praising the theme: life, the mother, and history are merely subplots, with the emphasis on the subject of history—humans. Overall, the novel is a work of considerable strength and depth, embodying the author's profound reflections on life, the mother, and history, as well as his unique and innovative exploration of social history and the times. It possesses strong intellectual depth and originality. Perhaps due to its length, the latter part of the novel, in terms of artistic technique, appears somewhat underdeveloped and lacks refinement, with a rushed conclusion that makes it feel less harmonious and complete than the earlier sections. The language also feels somewhat stiff, and the use of magical realism is not fully mastered. Of course, such a monumental work may have minor flaws in artistic execution, but these do not diminish its overall value.
