Each level of the Common Core Module consists of 3 parts: Comprehensive English, Interactive English, and Enrichment Reading. The Advanced Practical Module integrates three parts to focus on teaching practical English skills demanded by contemporary college students. The Contemporary College English series is edited by British renowned textbook author Neville Grant and Professor Gu Riguoku, President of the School of Applied English and Doctoral Supervisor at Beijing Foreign Studies University. Experts and professors from seven universities—Beijing Foreign Studies University, Beijing Normal University, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Beijing Institute of Technology, Wuhan University, Sun Yat-sen University, and Southwest Jiaotong University—participated in its compilation.
Introduction to the Common Core Module
Comprehensive English is based on reading authentic English texts while providing integrated English skills training, including the teaching and development of learning strategies. The four levels of Comprehensive English also construct a complete cultural knowledge network, organically combining language teaching, cultural instruction, and basic quality education.
Interactive English breaks through the traditional design model of listening and speaking courses. The four levels cover the main functions of English communication, emphasizing the cultivation of students' communicative competence while integrating reciprocal practice of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
Enrichment Reading takes the cultural knowledge network of Comprehensive English as its main thread, providing learners with abundant authentic English texts and opportunities for thinking with questions, fostering students' ability to learn excellently and independently.
The features of the Contemporary College English series are: authentic and life-related language materials that can be applied immediately; integrating language, culture, and knowledge to emphasize quality and learning ability development; highlighting communicative methods, emphasizing comprehensive training and complementary cyclic practice of the five skills; and facilitating student-centered classroom activities. The series is accompanied by audio cassettes, a detailed teacher's manual, and a self-study and self-assessment CD-ROM.
