Although we use various Chinese-English and English-Chinese dictionaries to learn English, the sentences we speak are not often used by Americans. Many sentences in the dictionary are grammatically correct, but Americans don’t understand their meaning (surprising, isn’t it?). I’ve often been asked if I could write a practical English dictionary that reflects the expressions used by contemporary Americans in their daily conversations. Many people have also suggested publishing a dictionary that allows for conversation using very short sentences. Inspired by this feedback, I decided to compile this book. For many years, I served as a lecturer for NHK TV’s popular program "Mini English Conversations – Learn and Use Phrases Instantly." This was a very well-received program. This book was planned and written from the same perspective as the program’s teaching materials. In other words, this dictionary collects conversational expressions used by contemporary Americans with clearly defined meanings. New words and expressions appear in the U.S. almost every day. Although Chinese is the same, the changes in spoken English expressions are particularly significant. This book focuses on "modern American expressions often used" to select various spoken phrase examples. Multiple American speakers were carefully consulted to confirm each sentence, and professors from the University of California, Irvine, also participated in this confirmation process. As mentioned earlier, many dictionaries often list uncommon and obscure examples. However, the sentences included in this dictionary primarily focus on concise and colloquial basic expressions, so readers can effectively learn truly practical English expressions. We believe this is a dictionary unlike any other, covering the most vivid expressions currently used in the U.S. Whether for travel, study abroad, business trips, communication with Americans, or correspondence with friends and family, we hope it will be an indispensable helper in all aspects of your life.
