Features: "LookAhead" is a large-scale multimedia English teaching series course, jointly developed over several years by four world-renowned English teaching authorities—the BBC English Department, Longman ELT, The British Council, and the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate. This course is suitable for students, teenagers, and adults, starting from beginner English and concluding at an intermediate level. The course is particularly designed with self-learners in mind, offering great convenience and support in its overall design and arrangement. "LookAhead" provides learners with rich audio materials through 60 TV programs, accompanied by textbooks, video tapes, and audio tapes. The course covers a wide range of fresh and diverse topics, balancing knowledge with entertainment while emphasizing communicative language functions, language skills training, and providing the necessary grammar knowledge. The 60 high-quality TV programs represent the highest international standard in foreign language teaching. The three hostesses, one British and one American, with their clear and natural British and American English, as well as their engaging hosting style, add a distinctive touch to the program. Situational dialogues, cartoons, illustrations, subtitles, interviews, real-life scenarios, and serial stories complement each other, fully leveraging the advantages of television media to demonstrate authentic language communication while highlighting key learning points.
This textbook consists of two parts: "TV Guide" and "Learning Guide." Each part is meticulously designed, standardized, and illustrated.
The "TV Guide" prepares learners to make the most of the abundant language materials provided by the TV programs, enabling active participation rather than passive learning. Each unit in the "TV Guide" spans six pages, focusing on communicative functions, grammar, sentence patterns, and vocabulary from the TV programs. It includes a variety of exercises designed around the TV content, contrasts differences in word usage between British and American English, and provides background knowledge of British and American society and culture. Every five units include a review unit, which is appended as "Mock Tests" at the back of the book to assess learning progress. The book also includes a grammar overview, a vocabulary list, and answers to all exercises.
The "Learning Guide" offers great convenience and support for self-learners, helping them review, digest, and understand the material while guiding them step-by-step in their study. It provides practical learning methods and suggestions. Additionally, the "Learning Guide" introduces extensive social and cultural background knowledge of British and American countries from the perspective of language learning, which in turn further enhances language acquisition. Each unit in the "Learning Guide" spans eight pages: one page for the unit study plan, one page each for listening, reading, speaking, and writing exercises, two pages for stories, and one page for review. Learners can flexibly choose any part that suits their needs.
The book features two ongoing stories: one a detective story, the other a science fiction story. These stories maintain the gripping plots of excellent literary works while closely integrating the unit's language learning content. They are filled with humor, making the learning experience both instructive and enjoyable.
"LookAhead" is recognized internationally as the official textbook for the KET and PET English proficiency tests organized by the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (which have been introduced in China). It is widely adopted worldwide, and the textbook itself includes 12 progressively challenging mock tests for learners preparing for these exams. "LookAhead" fully prepares you, boosting your confidence for the exams and helping you become a more well-rounded individual ready for the 21st century.
