Features: The conception and compilation of this dictionary began in the spring of 1992. At that time, Deng Xiaoping, the chief architect of China's reform and opening-up, was conducting a southern tour, and his speech on accelerating reform and opening-up swept across the country like a mighty spring breeze. At that time, China's negotiations to join the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (now the "World Trade Organization") were in full swing. At that time, we had a strong aspiration: to compile and publish a dictionary on international trade and finance to contribute a little to China's opening-up. Seven years later, in this spring, as we were conducting the final proofreading of the dictionary, news came from across the Pacific, Europe, and our neighboring Japan: China was expected to join the World Trade Organization by the end of 1999. We sincerely felt relieved: our aspiration was about to be realized. Seven years have passed, and in the meantime, some similar dictionaries have been published. So, what makes our dictionary special?
First, our dictionary has a large number of entries. We referred to dozens of domestic and foreign dictionaries and made every effort to include relevant terms in international trade and finance, allowing readers to find all the necessary terminology in this dictionary. Second, the information provided in our dictionary is up-to-date. Over these seven or eight years, the world has seen significant changes: new countries have emerged, new banks have been established, new currencies have appeared, the "General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade" has become the "World Trade Organization," and the rankings of major banks and enterprises around the world have also changed. All of these are reflected in our dictionary. Much of the information is newly downloaded from the Internet. Third, in addition to terms related to finance and trade, we have also included some words from related fields such as insurance, law, accounting, auditing, and business, thereby expanding the functionality of our dictionary and allowing readers to avoid constantly consulting other dictionaries. Fourth, we have compiled over ten appendices, such as "Major Commercial Banks in Various Countries" and "Major Industrial Companies of the Four Major Economies (US, UK, Japan, Germany)." We believe that these materials are of great reference value to readers and that they do not need to consult other specialized reference books.
During the compilation of this dictionary, we received strong support from Dr. Tan Lei Xia, an Australian expert in international trade and finance at the China-Australia Senior Talent Training Center. He helped us solve some difficult problems and reviewed some entries. We sincerely thank him! We also referred to dozens of published domestic and foreign dictionaries and periodicals (see "Bibliography") and would like to extend our gratitude to the authors and publishers!
Finally, we would like to thank Hong Zhijuan and Yang Xueyi, two editors at Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, for their hard work in the compilation and publication of this dictionary and for providing us with many helpful suggestions. Due to our limited expertise, there may inevitably be flaws or errors in the book. We kindly request readers to point them out.
