The "Dictionary of Chinese Character Writing Essentials" (hereinafter referred to as "Dictionary") was conceptualized and planned by Mr. Liang Linchuan, with contributions from Mr. Zhang Guohong, Mr. Liu Minggang, and Mr. Chen Wuyun. The significance of this book for readers, especially those learning calligraphy, lies in its practical utility, helping to improve learners' proficiency in writing Chinese characters. Emphasizing practical application should be the ultimate goal of all calligraphy theories and copywriting guides. After studying materials related to Wang Xizhi, the "Sage of Calligraphy" from China, a Japanese calligrapher noted, "The essence of Wang Xizhi's calligraphy lies in its practicality," a statement that hits the mark. During his exploration of Han and Wei dynasty scripts and the development of bold and expansive calligraphy, Wang Xizhi made two innovative contributions. First, he emphasized a "calm and forceful" grip, allowing for flexible and unrestrained writing. Guo Zhao of the Song Dynasty wrote in "Línquán Gāozhì·Huàjué," "Speakers believe that Wang Youjun liked geese, as their turning necks resemble the way one holds a brush and turns the wrist to form characters." Second, he focused on revitalizing the practical function of running script in interpersonal communication. Since running script is often used as a "draft" in daily interactions, the recent rescue of the "Chunhua Pavilion Collection," a collection of Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi's calligraphy, has indeed played a significant role in the transmission of Chinese scripts, especially in the development of Song Dynasty running script. Under the premise of emphasizing practicality, the "Dictionary" captures the characteristics of Chinese character composition and categorizes them structurally to guide brushwork. This essentially combines the analysis of Chinese character forms with writing guidance. As an original concept, it builds upon and innovates traditional Chinese calligraphy theory, aiming to achieve the formal beauty of Chinese character writing.
