Sam Loyd's Mathematical Puzzles

Author: Martin Gardner
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2001-12-01
Features: This book is a collection of mathematical puzzles selected by the renowned American mathematical popularizer Martin Gardner from Sam Loyd's "Cyclopedia of Puzzles." The book uses several British and American measurement and currency units, some of which are rarely used even in Britain and America today. It also extensively discusses Western history, figures, geographical names, customs, and allusions, which may be unfamiliar to Chinese readers, especially young readers. Therefore, the translator has added some notes. Some illustrations in the original book still show Chinese people in the late Qing Dynasty attire, but to preserve the historical authenticity, they are generally not altered. If there is any mocking implication toward the Chinese in these illustrations, it can also serve as evidence of the backward and despised China of the old days. Additionally, a few illustrations have illegible text or letters, and some minor errors that do not affect reading have also been left uncorrected for the same reason.
