Editor's Note: The English original of The World Thinkers Translation Series was published by Thomson Learning, a U.S. publishing group, in 2000. The Chinese translation series published by Zhonghua Book Company consists of the Western part of the series. Just over a year after the original book's publication, the Chinese translation was released, which is truly remarkable for the publisher's vision, efficiency, and the translator's hard work. This series concisely and clearly discusses the academic views of important Western thinkers, their historical context, and development, serving as an introductory guide for students and philosophy enthusiasts to enter the of human wisdom. The original authors of this series have made great efforts to popularize the content: they use plain language, write fluently, and maintain clarity; they provide detailed and as thorough as possible explanations for many unavoidable specialized terms; and for some difficult ideas, they often interpret and analyze them from various angles and with different expressions. Some authors even go to the extent of providing multiple relatable examples from our daily lives to help readers understand certain ideas. It can be said that readers do not need extensive preparatory philosophical training to read this series.
Since the reform and opening-up, interest in Western thought has been growing day by day. However, the works of Western thinkers are highly challenging for beginners in philosophy, let alone for general Chinese readers who also face language and textual barriers. The publication of this translation series is truly timely. But this series is by no means leisurely works that freely interpret the originals without reference to the authors' own perspectives. One of the key features of this series is its close adherence to the original texts of the thinkers, providing authentic interpretations of classic works while connecting them to current realities and offering the authors' unique insights. This actively stimulates readers' interest in thinking and enhances their ability to further explore the original texts. The authors of this series demonstrate depth and breadth in their research and commentary on the original works, adding significant academic value to this popular reading material.
All the translations in this series have been carefully reviewed and repeatedly revised by the translators. Some translators are domestic experts on the relevant thinkers and have extensive translation experience. For example, Professor Chen Qiwei, the main translator of Russell, is an expert and translator who has studied and analyzed analytical philosophy for many years. Professor Zhang Xianglong, the main translator of Heidegger, has published numerous translations and several on Heidegger. Professor Li Chaojie, the translator of Freud, has published many works and is currently teaching Freud in English to graduate students in philosophy. Professor Hu Zixin, the translator of Hume, teaches English at the English Department. Of course, due to the tight publishing schedule, this series may inevitably contain errors and shortcomings, and we sincerely welcome readers' criticism and corrections.
