Features: Zuguqiao is a large-scale narrative and singing art form that flourished in the middle period of the Northern Song Dynasty. After the "Jingkang Incident," it split into northern and southern systems. In the early Yuan Dynasty, it experienced a period of prosperity. However, after Yuanzhen, due to the rise of Yuan (Yuan Dynasty opera), Zuguqiao gradually declined. By the Qing Dynasty, people had already forgotten about it. It inherited the tradition of narrative and singing arts while absorbing the artistic strengths of quzi ci (song lyrics), shuohua (storytelling), guzi ci (drum ballads), daju (large-scale tunes), Song Dynasty opera, chuanling (a type of performance), and changzuan (singing and storytelling). This helped it form its unique musical system, performance style, and literary characteristics, and it had a direct and significant influence on the northern and southern tunes. Through the study of Zuguqiao, we can clearly trace the evolution of ci (song lyrics) and qu (poetry). This book takes Zuguqiao as its subject, focusing on analyzing its dual characteristics of music and literature, exploring its developmental history, tracing its artistic origins, examining its transformations and influences, and showcasing the evolution of the transition from ci to qu.
