Features: This book is specifically written as a basic statistics textbook to enhance the statistical knowledge level of accounting personnel. In many enterprises or administrative departments in China, accounting personnel often work closely with statisticians, and many accountants even hold dual roles as statisticians. Therefore, they need to acquire a certain level of statistical knowledge. On the other hand, statistics, as a methodology science focused on the collection, organization, analysis, and application of data, plays a significant role in people's daily lives and work. In an era of rapid technological advancement and increasing importance of information processing, statistics has become an essential tool for people's lives, learning, and work, and has even become a fundamental quality required of individuals. Thus, for accountants to master basic statistical knowledge not only helps them perform their duties more effectively but also enhances their capabilities and keeps them aligned with the pace of modern development. In the writing of this book, we have tailored the content and structure to meet the requirements and conditions of accountants, referencing the guidelines of educational departments and the content of other statistics textbooks. Our goal is to ensure that the book's content and system are both suitable for the characteristics of accountants and meet their practical needs for work and study. The main features of this book are as follows:
1. The book does not provide an in-depth discussion of statistical data collection methods. Data collection is a highly complex foundational task that combines both scientific rigor and artistic skill. For large-scale statistical surveys, this work should be designed and conducted by specialized statisticians. For accountants, however, they accumulate vast amounts of data in their daily work and generally do not need to conduct large-scale statistical surveys to obtain data. Nevertheless, they should have a basic understanding of statistical data and its nature, which will facilitate their analysis and application in practice.
2. The book introduces basic statistical analysis methods using the computer software Excel. For many accountants, basic statistical analysis methods may seem abstract and challenging to learn. Excel spreadsheets are widely used in accounting work, and many accountants are familiar with and proficient in using them. While systematically introducing basic statistical knowledge suitable for accountants, this book completely avoids the mathematical derivations of statistical models and formulas. Instead, it relies on Excel software to demonstrate statistical analysis methods and their applications, which is more conducive to the learning, understanding, and application of accountants. This organizational approach is relatively uncommon in similar textbooks both domestically and internationally.
3. The content of this book is carefully selected to cover the essential statistical knowledge that accountants need to master. For example, accountants frequently encounter large volumes of data and often face the challenge of identifying their characteristics and patterns, establishing models that reflect reality, and using these models for prediction and management. This book focuses on introducing statistical analysis methods around this core theme and uses numerous examples to illustrate the concepts, aiming to achieve a "teach a man to fish" effect. For this reason, we have omitted topics commonly covered in general statistics textbooks, such as analysis of variance (which is also extensively discussed and applied in Excel software), as well as some specialized statistical topics like non-parametric statistics and multivariate analysis. However, we have included content on time series analysis and index number analysis. Of course, the content of this book can be selected based on actual needs.
4. The book strives to use examples that are suitable for accountants. According to the characteristics of statistics, we know that statistics is a methodology science applicable to almost every discipline, and there are numerous examples to illustrate statistical analysis methods. However, in this book, all the examples are related to economics and management and are commonly encountered and easily understandable by accountants.
