Features: This book explores the diplomatic relations of the Spring and Autumn Period, such as the selection and appointment of diplomatic personnel, mutual visits between states, and the art of diplomacy. It also analyzes and studies various factors influencing diplomatic relations, such as hostages, exiles, wars, and marriages. It is believed that the ancient diplomatic art, thoughts, and techniques can still benefit modern diplomatic activities. The book dedicates sufficient space to showcasing the diplomatic talent and wisdom of ancient Chinese statesmen, with dedicated sections on "Guan Zhong's Diplomatic Thought" and "Zi Chan's Diplomatic Thought," both of which are rich in enlightening content.
The former, as the Prime Minister of Qi, advised Duke Huan of Qi on domestic reforms, achieving the effects of enriching the state and strengthening its military. On the other hand, he proposed the idea of "winning over others with courtesy and attracting distant states with virtue, where virtue and courtesy are not exchanged, and no one is not moved" to the Duke of Qi, thereby gaining the trust of the feudal lords and achieving hegemony in the east. The latter, as the ruler of a small state, skillfully navigated the conflicts between Jin and Chu, adopting a balanced foreign policy to avoid bullying by major powers and ensure the survival of his state. At the same time, to uphold the interests of major powers, he engaged in reasonable, forceful, and measured struggles against their hegemonic behavior. Under the atmosphere of the Spring and Autumn hegemonic politics, through effective diplomatic strategies, he maintained the dignity of his state and secured a relatively peaceful survival environment. The diplomatic thoughts and wisdom of the ancients may still hold some enlightening value for modern people in dealing with the complex and intricate international environment today.
