The U.S. Scribner log volume table was revised in July 1972.
1. Formula for calculating log volume
The calculation formula for the Scribner log volume is based on cutting 1-inch thick boards from the small end of the log. The specific method involves drawing several board strips, each 1 inch thick, with the minimum width not less than 4 inches, on the small end of the log cross-section. The strips are separated by 1/4-inch saw kerfs. The sum of the widths of all the strips is calculated to determine the cross-sectional area in square inches, which is then divided by 12 to obtain the volume of the log in board feet (1 board foot = thick 1 inch × wide 1 foot × long 1 foot).
