English-Chinese Chinese-English Medical Dictionary (Obstetrics and Gynecology Division): Obstetrics and Gynecology Division

Author: Weng Xinzhi
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 1998-10-01
Features: There are three main features of this dictionary: "completeness," "currency," and "accuracy."
The "completeness" refers first to the comprehensive coverage of categories. The entire dictionary includes twelve volumes: Internal Medicine, Surgery, Gynecology, Pediatrics, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Dentistry, Dermatology, Laboratory Medicine, Pharmacy, Rehabilitation, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Second, each volume contains comprehensive content with a large vocabulary. It covers both clinical and basic aspects; both examination and diagnosis, as well as treatment and management, including all relevant terms.
The "currency" refers first to the inclusion of newly emerging terms and meanings from recent international medical literature in each volume. Second, the editorial style also strives for innovation.
The "accuracy" refers first to the dictionary strictly adhering to the standards published by the National Committee for the Revision of Technical Terms in Science and Technology to determine translations. It uses different symbols to indicate "recommended names," "also known as" (i.e., non-recommended names), and "former names" (i.e., outdated names). After "also known as" and "former names," it marks "recommended names" with an arrow (→), allowing readers to clearly understand which terms to use and which to avoid. Second, for terms named after foreign scientists, the dictionary revises them based on the principle of "following the original naming conventions" rather than the previous practice of translating them according to English pronunciation.
