Features: The three national standards for jewelry and gemstones—“Jewelry and Gemstone Names” (GB/T 16552-2003), “Jewelry and Gemstone Identification” (GB/T 16553-2003), and “Diamond Grading” (GB/T 16554-2003)—were approved and promulgated by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine on July 1, 2003, and came into effect on November 1, 2003. To support the publicity and implementation of these revised standards for jewelry and gemstones, facilitate understanding and mastery of the new revised national standards by various sectors of the jewelry industry and relevant law enforcement agencies, and ensure the effective implementation of the revised standards at all stages, the National Jewelry Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, at the request of relevant authorities, organized standard drafters and experts and technical personnel from relevant fields to specifically compile this interpretation.
Since the Jewelry and Gemstone Names standard has a broad scope of application and the standardization of name identification is crucial to the overall regulation and development of the jewelry market, this interpretation focuses on explaining the provisions of the “Jewelry and Gemstone Names” standard in a question-and-answer format, with examples illustrating the specific usage of each provision in the standard. The interpretation of the “Jewelry and Gemstone Identification” standard emphasizes the use of identification methods and the identification of common jewelry and gemstones. The interpretation of the “Diamond Grading” standard also places emphasis on diamond grading operations, particularly the rules for grading mounted diamonds.
The revision of national standards for jewelry and gemstones will not only promote the development of China's jewelry market but also play a positive and important role in advancing international jewelry trade and technical exchanges between laboratories. The revision of national standards for jewelry and gemstones reflects the collective efforts of all members of the jewelry industry in China and represents an achievement of the Chinese jewelry industry.
