Publishing Date: 2002-01-01
Features: This book is compiled by Professor Wu Zengjian and others from Nanjing Agricultural University. It covers three main parts: epidemic prevention and health care for pig herds, diagnosis and treatment of major diseases at different growth stages of pigs, and diagnostic techniques for pig diseases. It focuses on large-scale pig farms while also catering to the needs of rural pig raisers. In terms of layout, it innovates in arrangement, combining traditional diagnosis and treatment methods with new technical data from domestic and international sources. It integrates theory and practice, making it scientific, practical, and easy to understand. Suitable for veterinary technicians, feeding management personnel, pig-raising specialists, and students and teachers of relevant agricultural institutions for reference.

> I. Principles of Epidemic Prevention
Epidemic prevention refers to the control of the occurrence and spread of infectious diseases. To effectively carry out epidemic prevention work for pig herds, it is essential to understand how diseases spread from individuals to the entire herd, which is the principle of disease epidemiology. Research indicates that completing this process requires three interconnected conditions: the pathogen is expelled from the infected animal's body (primarily sick pigs), often through feces, saliva, tears, and respiratory secretions, and remains in the external environment. Subsequently, it enters new susceptible herds through certain methods and pathways, creating new sources of infection. This cycle continues, forming the epidemiological process of infectious diseases. This process includes three basic links: the source of infection, transmission pathways, and susceptible animal populations. Only when all three links exist simultaneously and are interconnected can an infectious disease spread within a pig herd. If any one of these links is missing, the spread can be halted, and even if individual pigs are infected, the disease is easier to control. These three links are like a chain; if any one is cut, the chain breaks (Figure 1-1). Therefore, understanding the basic conditions and influencing factors of the epidemiological process of infectious diseases helps in formulating correct epidemic prevention measures, which is the principle of epidemic prevention work.
