In his youth, Professor Wei Jiangong actively participated in the New Culture Movement. After the liberation, Professor Wei Jiangong made significant contributions to the reform of Chinese characters and the popularization of language education. The Xinhua Dictionary he edited became one of the most influential and far-reaching modern Chinese dictionaries after the founding of New China. Professor Wei Jiangong dedicated his life to the teaching and research of Chinese language and characters, particularly excelling in the fields of phonology and phonetics. He was a renowned linguist, language educator, and ancient manuscript scholar in China. His writings covered all aspects of the Chinese language, exerting a profound influence, while also involving the creation of poetry and the study of literature, making his works exceptionally rich in content. Editing and publishing this five-volume collection is undoubtedly of great significance for the development of linguistic science and the flourishing of cultural and academic studies in the new era. Professor Wei Jiangong was a prolific writer throughout his life, with a career spanning over six decades. Over these six decades, the vocabulary, grammar, characters, phonetic symbols, and phonetic notations used to record the language have undergone considerable changes, making it difficult to standardize them by today's standards. Apart from minor unifications of certain variant characters, we have largely preserved the original historical form in other aspects. This approach may be beneficial for the study of the history of Chinese language and characters.
