Features: New Interchange Passages is a large-scale English textbook written for learners in non-English-speaking countries, and one of the most popular and influential English teaching materials internationally. The content of the textbook includes listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, as well as phonetic training and vocabulary expansion. It particularly emphasizes the development of listening and speaking skills. The primary goal of this book is to cultivate the ability to communicate in English, specifically: the ability to flexibly use English based on communicative contexts, purposes, and audiences. The book mainly uses American English, but its content is not limited to any particular country, region, or culture. This textbook is divided into six levels: Starter, Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, Level 4, and Level 5.
Starter Level: Designed for "true" beginners with no English foundation, this level explains basic grammar structures, vocabulary, and language functions.
Level 1: Aimed at learners with a basic level of English, this level further develops grammar, vocabulary, and pragmatic skills, enabling learners to reach a low-intermediate level.
Level 2: For learners with a low-intermediate level of English, this level further enhances grammar, vocabulary, and pragmatic skills, aiming to bring learners to an intermediate level.
Level 3: For learners with an intermediate level of English, this level focuses on developing the ability to communicate in relatively fluent and accurate English.
Level 4: For learners with a high-intermediate level of English, this level reinforces fluency and accuracy in English expression, promoting development in both language and communication.
Level 5: For learners with an advanced level of English, this level aims to bring learners to a level of natural and proficient English application.
Through a variety of thought-provoking and challenging exercises, the textbook enables students to further consolidate and develop their ability to communicate in English. In addition to applied skills exercises, the textbook also includes advanced discourse comprehension exercises. Listening exercises include: listening to narratives, listening to advertisements, listening to discussions, and listening to interviews. Reading activities include authentic reading passages on topics such as cross-cultural communication, lifestyles, and different values.
After completing all six levels, learners can reach a high-intermediate to advanced level, meaning they can skillfully use English for various communicative activities, approaching the level of China's English major Level 8.
