Features: This book is written according to the basic requirements of the theoretical mechanics course for higher industrial schools under the Ministry of Education. It is part of the Engineering Mechanics section of the "Theoretical Mechanics" series of textbooks for fundamental mechanics courses across the country. The book consists of six chapters, covering basic concepts and axioms of statics, the simplification, composition, and equilibrium of force systems, and equilibrium problems with friction. The book emphasizes the thinking process and methods for analyzing and solving problems, making it suitable for classroom teaching. It can serve as a textbook for theoretical mechanics courses in majors such as mechanical engineering, aerospace, navigation, civil engineering, electromechanical, and power in higher industrial schools. It is also suitable for part-time university, correspondence university students in related fields, as well as engineering professionals.
For non-rigid bodies, the applicability of this axiom is limited. For example, a soft rope can be in equilibrium when subjected to two equal and opposite pulling forces, but it cannot remain balanced if compressed. This shows that the necessary and sufficient conditions for the equilibrium of rigid bodies are merely necessary for deformable bodies and not necessarily sufficient.
