The New English-Chinese Dictionary, with over 9 million copies in print, is a Chinese-English lexical reference book primarily compiled in the 1970s. The 21st Century Edition of the New English-Chinese Dictionary has been fully revised and updated, presenting a completely new dictionary. The 21st Century Edition of the New English-Chinese Dictionary contains over 100,000 entries, including a large number of new words, meanings, and usages that have emerged in the past two to three decades. Its definitions encompass the content of comparable English-Chinese dictionaries published in the United States and the United Kingdom.
During this compilation process, every entry, definition, example, and idiom was meticulously checked. On one hand, we retained the correct and useful content from the original version; on the other hand, we referred to various English-Chinese dictionaries and specialized dictionaries published in the 1990s to correct errors and omissions in the original dictionary, supplement new information for relevant entries, and remove obsolete words and definitions.
The 21st Century Edition of the New English-Chinese Dictionary contains over 100,000 entries, with definitions covering the content of comparable English-Chinese dictionaries published in the United States and the United Kingdom. The new edition has undergone significant replacement and update of examples, including the removal of hundreds of politically motivated, unnatural English sentences or phrases from that time. The examples are set with greater emphasis on relevance and practicality, either helping readers better understand a particular definition or helping them master the typical usage of the word for broader application.
In the 21st Century Edition of the New English-Chinese Dictionary, we have added more than 300 illustrations, primarily to clarify definitions and make relevant entries or definitions immediately clear. This may be a first in English-Chinese dictionaries compiled on the mainland of China. In the appendix, we have added new content such as English proverbs, aphorisms, lists of countries and capitals around the world, an international direct dialing guide, and a table of chemical elements, all to enhance the knowledge, practicality, and interest of this dictionary.
