Zhongshan Scenic Area
Zhongshan, located in the eastern part of Nanjing, was anciently known as Jinling Mountain and was called Zhongshan during the Han Dynasty. At the end of the Han Dynasty, Jiang Ziwen, the county magistrate of Moling, was killed in battle here. To avoid naming taboo related to his ancestors, Sun Quan renamed it Jiangshan. It was later restored to Zhongshan during the Song Dynasty. It has been known as one of the "Four Famous Mountains of Jiangnan" since ancient times. Due to the presence of purple shale layers on the mountain, which shimmer under sunlight, the Ming Dynasty's Jiajing Emperor erected a stone monument inscribed with the characters "Shenlie Mountain" to commemorate Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang, the founder of the Ming Dynasty. Therefore, it was also known as Shenlie Mountain at that time.
Zhongshan stretches 7 kilometers from east to west and about 3 kilometers from north to south, covering an area of 31 square kilometers. It is majestic and magnificent, earning the name "Zhongshan Dragon Coiled."
