They also think.

Features: This is the insight of a highly talented and creative researcher from the Media Lab. It is profound, exhilarating, far-reaching, and utterly captivating. A revolution is underway. When objects begin to think, our lives and ways of thinking will be permanently changed. In this new book, Neil Gershenfeld inspires us to contemplate a wide range of possibilities. For me, reading this book is like peering into the future. We hope this series embodies the following characteristics:
· It need not be comprehensive, but should offer a unique perspective.
· It may not be entirely accurate, but it can provide enlightenment.
· It may not provide answers, but it can expand people's thinking horizons.
Most of the content in this book revolves around the Media Lab, as I spend most of my time there. Although this reflects my personal views, it is attributed to the respected academic community, students, and sponsors who helped me form these ideas. I describe the changes in the world, yet currently, there is a lack of a specific environment that merges bits and atoms. I hope this book serves as a catalyst for further discussion and brings the Media Lab to greater attention.
The book recreates conversations I had with three types of people: ordinary individuals about how the world around us is and will operate; industrial managers about how to seize opportunities from relentless commercial threats; and researchers attempting to solve new problems in new fields—those who lack interest or support in traditional domains. This book is written for these three groups, as I cannot separate these sections from myself.
