This book is the research outcome of the project "Applied Linguistics of Chinese" (textbook) undertaken by us as part of the Shandong Province Higher Education Teaching Content and Curriculum System Reform Project for the 21st Century. The ultimate goal of linguistic research is to guide language practice using linguistic principles, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of language comprehension and expression.
Initially, theoretical and applied linguistic research were not separated, primarily because linguistics was not yet advanced enough to necessitate such a division. In the early 19th century, research in language theory began to differentiate from applied linguistic research, with language teaching, a branch of applied linguistics, separating from the broader field of linguistics, which was then focused on historical issues. Since the 20th century, language science has further developed to meet the needs of societal progress and technological advancement. Applied linguistic research and theoretical research have been clearly distinguished, leading to rapid growth in applied linguistics, including language teaching.
This textbook was conceptualized and designed by Professor Chen Liming of the Institute of Teaching Theory of Chinese Language and Literature at Liaocheng Normal University. To avoid repetition with the current teaching content of "Modern Chinese," it does not discuss the fundamental theories of Chinese phonetics, vocabulary, and grammar. Instead, it focuses on the characteristics of Chinese phonetics, vocabulary, and grammar in the context of language teaching. To align with practical language teaching, it includes additional chapters on "The Characteristics of Discourse and Language Teaching" and "The Characteristics of Language Intuition and Language Teaching." To address the insufficient introduction of new academic achievements in existing language courses, it provides a concise overview of the fundamental theories and findings of semantics, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, and especially cultural linguistics, which has distinctive characteristics of Chinese language.
