Features: To support the implementation of the "College English Teaching Syllabus"; to meet the higher requirements of society for college English teaching; Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press solemnly launched the "College English" series textbooks at the beginning of the new century, contributing to the advancement of college English teaching in China.
A crystallization of collective wisdom: The entire series of textbooks was co-authored by experienced professors and English teaching experts from renowned institutions such as Fudan University, Peking University, East China Normal University, University of Science and Technology of China, South China University of Technology, Nanjing University, Wuhan University, Nankai University, Renmin University of China, Sun Yat-sen University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Southeast University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Soochow University.
Comprehensive and reasonable course combination: The series consists of four types of textbooks—Comprehensive, Listening and Speaking, Reading, and Fast Reading—as well as a Grammar Handbook. Additionally, preparatory-level textbooks for the first four courses are available for students with lower starting levels. Each textbook is interconnected, forming an organic whole.
Balancing language proficiency and comprehensive application skills: The series is centered around the "Comprehensive Textbook." Each unit revolves around a theme reflecting contemporary life, supplemented by the "Listening and Speaking Textbook," "Reading Textbook," and "Fast Reading Textbook." This guides students in deeply and comprehensively acquiring and mastering language and cultural knowledge related to each theme, as well as rich language materials, while providing extensive training in language-based comprehensive application skills for the practical theme.
A winning strategy for both quality development and exam preparation: Each textbook includes a certain number of exercises similar to those of the CET exams. The "Test Yourself" section in the "Comprehensive Textbook" is designed in the format of a CET exam paper, allowing students to familiarize themselves with the format and requirements of the CET while learning language knowledge and practicing language application skills, achieving the goal of balancing quality development and exam preparation.
The "College English" series textbooks are an innovative, multi-dimensional supplementary set comprising books, audiovisual materials, CDs, and online resources. Since their release in 2001, they have been widely welcomed and praised by schools in use. Due to their full compliance with the basic requirements for college foreign language teaching proposed by the Ministry of Education, the series was selected as the "National Planning Textbook for Higher Education 'Five-Year Plan'" and the "Ministry of Education Recommended College Foreign Language Textbook."
The series includes one volume each of "Comprehensive Textbook," "Listening and Speaking Textbook," "Reading Textbook," "Fast Reading Textbook" (from 1 to 6), and one "Grammar Handbook." Given China's vast territory, the teaching resources, faculty, and student needs vary across regions and institutions. Therefore, it is necessary to implement classified guidance and tiered teaching. To maximize the satisfaction of students with different levels, proficiency, and learning objectives, we specifically organized and compiled the preparatory-level series, which includes one volume each of the "Comprehensive Textbook" and "Listening and Speaking Textbook," written by British experts familiar with college English teaching in China.
This textbook strictly adheres to the requirements of Chinese college English teaching. Each unit is organized thematically, enabling students to comprehensively and deeply master rich language knowledge, acquire cultural information, and develop their listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation skills. The post-class exercises are designed to be diverse, targeted, engaging, and challenging. In terms of content selection, emphasis is placed on the comparison of Eastern and Western cultures to cultivate students' cultural literacy and awaken their local and cross-cultural awareness.
