The book explores land issues during several major social transformation periods in Japanese history, as well as closely related problems of farmers, agriculture, and rural areas. The chapter analyzes the formation process of the Bando system and its differences from the Juntian system (taking koufentian and yuanchazi as examples), further revealing the development and patterns of productivity and production relations in Japan during the Ritsuryō period. The book also examines the complete disintegration of the Bando system and the establishment of the domain system, analyzing the production methods, characteristics, changes, and structure within the domains. It further explores the deep connections between the domain system and the changes in Japan's superstructure at the time, examining the internal reasons for the transformation of ancient Japanese society from the economic perspective of the land system. The fourth chapter focuses on describing the main content, characteristics, and land policies implemented by the Tokugawa Shogunate to maintain the land system of Shigekō-henpō under the Bakuhan system, as well as the eventual disintegration of this system along with the development of commodity economy among farmers.
