Couplets, also known as "linglian" in elegant terms and "duizi" in colloquial language, are a fragrant and unique bloom in the vast garden of Chinese literary arts. They are a treasure of traditional ethnic culture and have long been favored by the general public. Among the three major values of couplets—artistic, academic, and practical—the practical value is the greatest. In the past, they were commonly used for imperial examinations, selecting capable officials, literary exchanges, and inscribing couplets for scenic spots and historical sites. Even high-ranking scholars and refined individuals often used couplets for matchmaking and friendship. In modern times, with societal progress and the improvement of people's cultural literacy, the use of couplets has become even more widespread. Folk traditions such as festivals, weddings, funerals, moving into new homes, celebrations, and business openings all incorporate couplets. As a practical literary form, couplets are evergreen and enduring. This book is entirely designed for reader convenience, categorizing couplets according to actual usage habits—a true practical approach to compiling couplets. The Famous Couplets of Renowned Figures are those hung in the homes of distinguished individuals, renowned for their profound artistic conception, elegant wording, and enlightening wisdom. They are often the personal mottos of the residents. In the past, hanging couplets in homes was the practice of high officials, scholars, and literary elites, but now it is common in both urban and rural households. Especially when moving into a new home or completing renovations, it is customary to display one or two elegant couplets indoors to bring joy and reflect cultural refinement. As a result, the demand for literary and refined couplets for home use continues to grow.
