Newborn jaundice medication is more effective when used in combination than when used alone. Commonly used drugs include: prednisone, taken orally 1-2 times daily at a dose of 1-2 mg per kilogram of body weight; phenobarbital (luminal), taken orally 2-3 times daily at a dose of 5-8 mg per kilogram of body weight. Some traditional Chinese medicines can also be used as newborn jaundice medication. Commonly used formulas include: 15 grams of bupleurum, 3 grams of processed rhubarb, 9 grams of scutellaria, and 1.5 grams of licorice, taken as a decoction once daily for 3-5 days; 3 grams of processed rhubarb, 3 grams of coptis, and 4.5 grams of scutellaria, taken as a decoction once daily for 3-5 days.
