Developmental dysplasia of the hip

Patient's question:

After long-distance running, thigh pain

Doctor's answer:

Your child has congenital hip dysplasia; primarily involving developmental abnormalities of the acetabulum and femoral head. Correct treatment can be curative before the age of three! Manual closed reduction is the best approach. Conservative treatment using a multi-functional abduction splint stimulates both the femoral head and acetabulum with stress, achieving concentric circle reduction and recovery. On the other hand, plaster fixation, due to its lack of breathability, causes skin compression and joint stiffness, failing to achieve dynamic and static stimulation that would stress both the femoral head and acetabulum, thereby hindering the development of the acetabulum and femoral head and preventing recovery. It is also crucial to avoid early surgery, as it may lead to traumatic arthritis, necrosis of the head, and lifelong complications.
