How to treat strabismus

Patient's question:

There is a squint in one eye. The doctor said surgery is needed. Is there any other treatment method?

Doctor's answer:

Strabismus affects binocular visual function, and severe cases may lack good stereoscopic vision. Stereoscopic vision is a high-level visual function possessed only by humans and higher animals, and it is one of the prerequisites for performing fine tasks. Without good stereoscopic vision, there will be significant limitations in learning and employment. Most strabismus patients also suffer from amblyopia. Due to long-term monocular fixation in strabismus patients, the other eye may experience disuse atrophy or stop developing, resulting in poor vision that cannot reach normal levels even with corrective glasses later. Treatment for strabismus is recommended through surgery. If the cause is known, it should be removed.
