3.5-year-old girl, platelet count decreased for unknown reasons

Patient's question:

My daughter is 3 and a half years old. The blood test results from March 19, 2013, showed platelets at 125. Currently, there are no obvious signs of bleeding.

Doctor's answer:

When the platelet count is <100×10^9/L, it is considered thrombocytopenia, commonly seen in platelet production disorders such as aplastic anemia, acute leukemia, and acute radiation sickness, among others; increased platelet destruction, such as primary thrombocytopenic purpura, splenomegaly, excessive consumption such as disseminated intravascular coagulation, and familial thrombocytopenia such as giant platelet syndrome, among others.
