Melancholy of Paris

Author: Baudelaire
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2004-04-01
Features: In this collection of essays, we can see the poet's thorough and fierce satire and scorn directed at the dirty and distorted reality of society, as well as his merciless lashing out and fierce criticism of traditional, decaying social customs. We can also read the poet's yearning for beauty and his captivating depictions of it. Moreover, we can sense the poet's subtle yet elusive thoughts, some of which carry profound meanings. Of course, some of the "odd and unusual" pieces are somewhat difficult to understand, which reflects to some extent the spiritual crisis and even pathological psychology caused by the inescapable contradictions of capitalist society in the author and some intellectuals. Overall, this collection of essays, like Les Fleurs du mal, holds a unique social significance. This book is one of the "Three Selects." Almost at the same time as Les Fleurs du mal was published, Baudelaire began to publish a series of essays in various magazines. According to the poet's intention, he wanted to write "a poetic prose, without rhythm or musical notes." These essays were later published under the title Le Spleen de Paris, consisting of 50 pieces. Baudelaire wrote, "In short, it is still Les Fleurs du mal, but freer, more delicate, and sharper." This book has long been regarded as a classic of 20th-century literature. The predecessor of the Life·Reading·New Knowledge Sanlian Bookstore, Life Bookstore, published a Chinese translation of this book in 1935, accompanied by 50 exquisite illustrations. This time, the text is based on Mr. Adin's Chinese translation from 1981, and the illustrations are from the old version of Life Bookstore, re-released.
