Features: "Feminist Consciousness," "Gender Consciousness," "Femininity," "Masculinity"—what do these terms mean in contemporary Chinese society? What is "gender"? How is it related to China's "modernity" and "globalization"? What significance does it hold for understanding men and women in modern society? Wang Zheng, a scholar based in the United States, analyzes the complex sociocultural meanings embedded in these common terms through an interdisciplinary feminist lens and a poststructuralist approach, revealing the close relationship between the evolution of gender discourse and political, economic, social, and cultural transformations. This collection, featuring diverse genres such as personal reflections on the experiences of cultural hybrids, essays on sociocultural landscapes, academic papers, and lecture reports, introduces feminist core concepts in an accessible manner, showcases the development of feminist scholarship in the international academic sphere, and records some of the author's practices and reflections in promoting women's studies and gender studies in China. "Culture, including gender culture, is a human construct, which in turn shapes the people within it. Having more tools to analyze cultural construction will help us enhance our ability to resist dominant cultural control." The feminist analytical framework of this collection provides readers with a prism to deconstruct the codes of patriarchal culture.
