Features: Li Qingzhao's late works, which are deeply imbued with a strong sense of nostalgia, are constantly shrouded in profound sorrow and despair. Her loneliness and boredom are comforted only by the sincere affection of her husband, Zhao Mingcheng, and the happy family life before the Southern Crossing. This series, "Literati Lovers," attempts to present a series of emotional experiences between famous literati and women or men from the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, primarily through biographical studies and literary creations. It aims to narrate touching stories in an accessible manner, bring characters to life, and recreate social customs of the time. The selected figures were all quite representative of their era. Yuan Zhen's The Story of Yingying (also known as The Meeting at the True Hall) has a certain real-life prototype and vividly reflects the marital and romantic ideals of Tang Dynasty literati. The story later evolved into The Western Chamber, vividly demonstrating the evolution of ancient love concepts. Li Qingzhao and Zhao Mingcheng were an exceptionally rare loving couple in ancient Chinese history. Their love was set against the backdrop of the gradual rise of Neo-Confucianism in the Song Dynasty, the sudden change in women's romantic perspectives, and the great social upheaval between the Northern and Southern Song. Zhao Mengfu was both a renowned litterateur, calligrapher, and painter and a nobleman of a fallen dynasty. Under the social context of Mongol rule in the Yuan Dynasty, his marital and romantic views underwent certain transformations, offering a glimpse into the integration of Central Plains culture and foreign cultures. Feng Menglong lived in the Ming Dynasty, a period resembling the emergence of modern capitalist elements, the awakening of urban consciousness, and the pursuit of sensual pleasures. He paid close attention to women's themes throughout his life, and his works embody the views on women and love of Ming Dynasty people. Hou Huiqing, after marrying, was not only frequently remembered by Feng Menglong in poetry but also never stepped into brothels again. Mao Biqiang and Dong Xiaowan lived during the transition between the Ming and Qing dynasties, and their love connected with the great changes of the era. Mao Biqiang's "Recollection in Words" (a unique poetic style he created for Dong Xiaowan) became widely celebrated by later generations. However, the historical records of such ancient couples who experienced love and romance varied greatly. Often, one partner's significant success in literary creation made their love story equally famous and widely disseminated. The other partner in the relationship then became household names. Specifically, in this series, Yuan Zhen, Li Qingzhao, Zhao Mengfu, Feng Menglong, and Mao Biqiang all left behind a wealth of literary works, and their personal life stories are relatively well-documented. The other half of the couples, however, have much fewer records. As a result, the series inevitably focuses more on one partner in each relationship. All these factors are sufficient to demonstrate the complex evolution of marital and romantic concepts in ancient China and their diverse manifestations. The series aims to combine popular accessibility with academic rigor. At the same time, it offers a new and in-depth understanding of the literary creations of these specific authors. The authors of the series hope that readers will enjoy exploring history with interest and gain aesthetic pleasure, thereby benefiting from the establishment of healthy marital and romantic perspectives.
