What is the best disinfectant to use for a newborn's umbilical cord?

Patient's question:

No

Doctor's answer:

Generally, after a child is born, the wrapped gauze should be removed within 24 hours, and no longer wrapped, to promote the drying and falling off of the umbilical cord stump. When handling the umbilical cord, wash your hands thoroughly and then pinch up the cord gently. Use a 75% disinfectant alcohol swab to disinfect around the base of the cord, removing all secretions and bloodstains. Do this 1 to 2 times daily to keep the umbilical area clean.
