Features: Tadao Ando, born in Osaka, Japan in 1941, spent his childhood on sports fields and streets. Before adulthood, he was fascinated by ship and aircraft model making, learned woodworking, and even practiced boxing. At the age of 18, Ando began studying traditional buildings such as temples, shrines, and tea houses in Kyoto and Nara, the cultural ancient cities of Japan. Starting in 1962, he traveled to Europe and America to study famous buildings in Western civilization and drew numerous travel sketches. In 1969, Ando returned to his hometown of Osaka and began his architectural career, founding Tadao Ando Architectural Office. In 1975, Ando completed his breakthrough work—the Toyo House in the Toyo District of Osaka, also known as the Toyo Long House. The building won the Annual Award of the Japan Institute of Architects in 1979. Since then, Ando has received a series of international architectural awards, including the Pritzker Architecture Prize. In 1983, his Kobe Rokko Residential Complex won the Japan Cultural Design Award. In 1985, he received the Alvar Aalto Prize from the Finnish Association of Architects. In 1986, he was awarded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. In 1987, the Rokko Mountain Church (Church of the Wind) won the Mainichi Prize. In 1988, the Kiyosaki House received the Kisho Kurokawa Grand Prize. In 1989, he was awarded the Gold Medal of the French Academy of Architecture. In 1991, he received the Bruno (Arnold W-Brunner) Memorial Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 1992, he won the Carlsberg Architecture Prize. In 1993, he received the Japan Academy Award. In 1995, he won the Pritzker Prize for Architecture and the Chevalier de l'Ordre award from the French Academy of Arts and Literature. In 1996, he received the first prize of the 8th Imperial Diet "FRAITESOL" award. In 1997, he received the Royal Gold Medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Officer de l'Ordre award from the French Academy of Arts and Literature. In 1998, the Osaka History Museum won the 6th Public Building Award (awarded every two years). In addition, Tadao Ando is an Honorary Senior Member of the American Institute of Architects, the Royal Institute of British Architects, the German Society of Architects, the Honorary Senior Member of the French Academy of Architecture, and the Honorary Senior Member of the Royal Institute of Architects of Scotland. Tadao Ando has also served as a visiting professor at world-renowned universities such as Harvard University, Columbia University, and Yale University, and has given academic lectures at universities like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Since 1997, Ando has been teaching at the University of Tokyo.
