Zhang Henshu Vol.

Author: Xie Xizhang
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2004-06-01
Features: Zhang Henshu was one of the most severely distorted, misunderstood, belittled, neglected, overlooked, and suppressed writers in the history of modern Chinese literature. For a considerable period, people either ignored him or downplayed his literary achievements, or, in a way that affirmed him, suppressed his uniqueness, rigidly classifying him into a certain camp. Although Zhang Henshu possessed the temperament and qualities of a scholar, he was not a famous literati; his writing was both popular and urban, and so was his life. Mr. Lao She wrote "A Little Recognition," praising him as "the only elderly writer known to all, men and women alike," affirming that he "was a true scholar," and describing him as "a man of integrity, full of justice, who cherished his reputation." "Zhang Henshu has added a new wealth to Chinese literature; he is a great writer with worldwide influence. A mature Zhang Henshu is not only a great master of popular literature but also a great master of modern literature. Whether in terms of quantity or quality, his works are superior and possess a unique style. We must absolutely not ignore or belittle him."
