Patient's question:

Child has jaundice at 20, underwent MRI. The report is as follows; symmetrical slightly high signals on T1WI in bilateral basal ganglia, dorsal pons, midbrain, and dentate nucleus of the cerebellum, with unclear boundaries. Bilateral cerebral white matter shows long T1 and long T2 signals, particularly prominent in the frontal lobes, angles of lateral ventricles, and centrum semiovale. Multiple small patchy T1 high signals are observed in the right occipital lobe cerebral parenchyma. No other clear abnormal signals are seen in the rest of the cerebral parenchyma. The ventricular system shows no significant widening, and the midline structures are central. Seeking expert interpretation!

Doctor's answer:

It is recommended to undergo an MRI examination. The results showed that the size and shape of the brain were normal, but there were patchy short T1 and short T2 signal shadows in the midbrain, basal ganglia, pons, and bilateral thalamus, which are consistent with the findings of neonatal bilirubin encephalopathy (kernicterus).
