Chekhovskii (1828–1889), Russian revolutionary, philosopher, writer, and critic. Born in Saratov in July 1828 to a family of priests. At 18, he entered the humanities department of St. Petersburg University. From then on, he frequently associated with the advanced intellectual group, the Petrashevsky Circle, immersing himself in the study of Hegel’s idealist philosophy and Feuerbach’s materialist philosophy, while also developing a strong interest in French utopian socialism. In 1850, after graduating from university, he returned to Saratov the following year to teach literature and promote progressive ideas in a secondary school. After marrying in 1853, Chekhovskii returned to St. Petersburg, becoming a contributor to the progressive journals "Natsiya" and "Modernnik." In 1855, he published his famous doctoral dissertation, "The Aesthetic Relationship of Art to Reality." This thesis boldly challenged Hegel’s idealist aesthetics and proposed the definition "Beauty is life." That same winter, he began publishing "An Overview of Russian Literature in the Gogolian Era," systematically exploring the development of Russian literary criticism. In 1856, when went abroad for medical treatment, Chekhovskii took over the editorial role of "Modernnik," turning it into a powerful platform for revolutionary ideas. In 1862, Chekhovskii was arrested by the Tsarist government and imprisoned in the Peter and Paul Fortress. In 1864, he was sentenced to seven years of hard labor and lifelong exile to Siberia. During his imprisonment and exile, he remained undeterred, writing many outstanding works filled with revolutionary passion, such as "What Is to Be Done?" (1862–1863) and "The Prelude" (1867–1869). In 1883, he was granted permission to live in Astrakhan. It was not until 1889 that he was finally allowed to return to his homeland. Due to the immense suffering he endured, he passed away in October of that year.
