Montgomery, British Field Marshal, one of the outstanding commanders of the Allied forces during World War II. In 1943, he participated in the conquest of Sicily and the landing in Italy. In 1944, he led the Allied forces into France and commanded the Allied forces' assault on Normandy on June 6, achieving victory in the D-Day landings. He was later promoted to Field Marshal and ennobled as Viscount. He served as Chief of the Imperial General Staff from 1946 to 1948. During World War II, Montgomery served on the French and Belgian battlefields. In 1920, he entered the Camberley Staff College for studies. In 1934, he was transferred to the Quartermaster General's Department of the Imperial General Staff College as a director of instruction. From 1937, he served as a brigadier general and then a division commander. On August 4, 1941, Winston Churchill appointed Bernard Law Montgomery as the commander of the Eighth Army. Montgomery's arrival changed everything. He received Churchill's support, and Britain's codebreakers provided him with a full overview of Rommel's tactical plans. Montgomery meticulously gathered strength to ensure he had the advantage when launching the decisive attack against Rommel's forces on October 23, 1942.
At the outbreak of World War II, Montgomery led the Third Division of the Expeditionary Force into France. He participated in the command of the Dunkirk evacuation. After returning to Britain, he was ordered to take command of the southeastern region of England, which was most threatened by a German invasion. In July 1940, he became the commander of the Fifth Army. In August 1942, Montgomery was sent to North Africa at Churchill's request to take command of the Eighth Army. From October 23 to November 4, 1942, he led his troops in fierce battles against German and Italian forces in the El Alamein area, defeating Germany's "Desert Fox," Rommel, and thus turning the tide of the North African campaign. Subsequently, the Eighth Army, in coordination with the Allies, completely destroyed the remaining North African forces in Tunisia in May 1943. After the Battle of El Alamein, Montgomery was knighted and promoted to General. In July 1943, he led the Eighth Army in the Sicily and southern Italy campaign.
