This is a social romance story created during the Republican era. In the late Qing Dynasty, after the abolition of the imperial examination system and the promotion of schools, the Ningbo youth Hua Guoxiong followed his cousin Zhong Wenru to study in Shanghai. At Zhengyi School, they witnessed all kinds of strange people and bizarre events—corrupt and incompetent officials, hypocritical scholars who sought pleasure, opportunistic new students, and who disregarded their dignity and national pride. Later, due to the government's crackdown on revolutionary publications, Hua and Zhong were forced to return to Ningbo. Soon after, Hua Guoxiong went to Japan for further studies, pursued the revolution, secretly joined the Tongmenghui, and married the extraordinary woman Feng Ruixian. Zhong Wenru, with the help of friends, also went to the United States for studies. The female revolutionary Feng Ruixian returned to China on a mission to gather intelligence but mistakenly fell into the enemy's trap and only barely survived after experiencing many twists and turns. Zhong Wenru's love stories with his cousin Hua Zhifeng and his girlfriend Cheng Qiongzhu are also vivid and intricate. Later, after the success of the 1911 Revolution, Hua Guoxiong returned to China and took a position in Shanghai. He took leave to return home to visit his mother, where an unexpected story unfolded.
