Under the scorching sun, Crani is a war-mad creature! Crani is getting closer! It's a summer when roses bloom late, and the mice of the Red City Kingdom are preparing a grand feast. None of them realize that danger is lurking ahead; War-mad Crani is leading his evil rat army to conquer the Red City. Taking the Red City for his own is Crani's greatest ambition. But strangely, Crani often dreams of a armored mouse wielding a sword, gazing down at him menacingly, as if determining his fate.
War then begins. The mice of the Red City must solve a mysterious poem and find the sword of the deceased hero Martin to repel Crani's attack. The young Matthias swears to find the sword. Through trials and tribulations, he succeeds. With the power of the sword, the Red City defeats Crani's frenzied attacks time and again, ultimately slaying the giant snake and achieving a decisive victory. Matthias grows into the great hero of the Red City.
The novel creates a host of animals with distinct personalities, such as the clever and brave Matthias, the bloodthirsty and brutal Crani, the gluttonous and witty rabbit, the mute squirrel who knows all the secrets of the jungle, the immensely powerful badger, the alcoholic hedgehog, the kind and simple mole, the impatient and straightforward sparrow, the wise and aged owl, the cunning and sly fox, the sneaky weasel who steals chickens and dogs, and the giant snake with glowing eyes. These animals perform a series of suspenseful, mysterious, magical, and humorous stories that make readers hold their breath from the very first page and refuse to let go.
This is the first work in Brian Jacques' Red City Animal Fantasy series, beloved by children worldwide for its enchanting story and captivating charm.
