Features: The story takes place in the small town of Jacmel in Haiti, South America. The novel tells the legendary experiences of Adriana, a young French girl. She is young and beautiful, a shining star in Jacmel. The tragedy occurs at her wedding, when the girl suddenly collapses and dies during the ceremony. It all stems from an evil butterfly—Ertazar Granchire. This is a demon who chases and harms women, having been transformed into a butterfly by a curse after seducing his adoptive father's adopted gardener. It was him who poisoned the lemonade at the wedding. Next, Jacmel holds a vigil for the young girl, which is a grand Vodou tradition of a masked carnival where people wildly sing and dance, playing various strange roles. The day after Adriana's burial, her body disappears from the grave. No one knows where she went. The beautiful girl leaves, and Jacmel declines ever since.
