She loves Ashley Wilkes, but when she learns that Ashley is to marry Melanie Hamilton, she marries Melanie's brother Charles in anger. Soon after, Charles dies in the war. After the Civil War ends, Scarlett manages Tara plantation personally, achieving financial independence. Later, she marries Frank Kennedy and runs a lumber business together. She also forces Ashley to become the manager of one of her lumber mills. Frank dies in an accident, and at the age of 27, Scarlett marries Rhett Butler, who has made a fortune in the arms trade. However, she remains obsessed with Ashley, destroying the love between them, and Rhett leaves her. It was only after Melanie's death and Ashley's rejection of her sympathy that Scarlett realizes that Rhett, who shares her personality, is the man she truly loves.
