Features: This piece was composed for the Houston Symphony Orchestra to commemorate the 200th anniversary of American independence. The full score was completed in spring 1976 in Madrid. This work can be categorized as a symphony, but it is also a symphonic poem with occasional abstract characteristics. Unlike typical symphonic poems, it does not contain any specific narrative or descriptive content beyond the title. The piece begins with the of timpani and ends with the of timpani, with the sound gradually fading into the distance. The intention is to evoke in the audience a sense of mystery about the distant world. After the introduction, the orchestra presents two themes that recur throughout the work—melodic phantoms—interrupted by short, rapid fragments. Overall, the orchestral section is very clear, except for the fragments where atonal hallucinations add a degree of complexity to the piece. The composer used a full symphony orchestra, though some sections are scored for a smaller ensemble, with one section featuring only flute, harp, xylophone, and glockenspiel. The work ends with ppp, as if it disappears into space—into the distant world.
