Author Bio: Van Dine (1888–1939), whose real name was Wilkie Hunter Lee, was an American literary critic and historian of American literature, having written several (monographs). In 1923, he was hospitalized for neurasthenia and underwent long-term treatment. During his recovery, at the doctor's suggestion, he began reading a large number of British detective novels. He introduced these novels to the United States, published reviews, and proposed the famous "Twenty Principles for Writing Detective Novels," which led him to become a writer himself (he had once harshly criticized detective novels in his youth). This made him a best-selling author at the time, with such enthusiasm that it helped the publisher weather the economic depression. He is considered the beginning of the golden age of American detective fiction. Van Dine had strict requirements for the plot design of his novels, believing that reading detective novels was purely an intellectual activity to stimulate the mind, and that the handling of criminal issues did not rely on the legal system to uphold justice, revealing his unique criminal aesthetic. The Case of the Velvet Claws is Van Dine's final detective novel. The novel begins with the successful escape of the outlaw Bonnie, who may have been involved in the arrest of the police officer who initially apprehended him.
